The return of jimmy carter

George w bush narowly defeated vice president al gore. His first year was tumultuous.  Following attacks on the twin towers, the pentagon and a thawted third attack, the us waged a war on terror. He invaded Afghanistan.  Using the war on terror as a pretext he invaded iraq and overthrew sadem housane.  The war in iraq although scesfull at first went sour and so did the popurity of the president.

With the unpopularity of the war, the democraric party hopped to capitalize on it. The problem was manny of the up and comers voted for the use of force against iraq. Many wanted someone who had stood against the war in iraq from the beginning.

In his book,”dude wheres my country”,micheal more sugested running oprah winfrey against w. Winfrey had no interest in runing.  While more kept trying to get Oprah to run. He qietly looked for an alternative.  A friend of his sugested a name that blew his mind.  More lived the idea.  He seemed to be someone who fit the bill.

More started a movement to draft a man who once had served as president. Jimmy carter served as president from 1977 to 1981. Carter lost to ronald reagen. Carter had focused his post presidency on humiterian and diplomatic work.he had been called a great x president.

Carter was reluctant to run. Draft carter movement grew in populerity. Former national secuity advisor zivignew brasinski joined the bandwagon. Even henry kissenger joined the fray. Al gore said he should run.

Carter feared it might hurt his legacy. A legacy he worked so hard to build up folowering the defeat in 1980. If he lost he would lose his effectiveness as a global satesman and demicratic party elder. The dnc started urging him to run.

On april 17, 2003, jimmy carter declared that he was indeed runing for president.  Former vermont governor Howard deen droped out. He endorsed carter. Bill clinton endorsed carter. Clinton pledged the clinton machine to his disposal.

Dnc chair terry mcalife tried to clear the field . senator john kery wanted to run. He was angery at carter. The demicratic party did not want a masive primary fight.  Kery tried to get the number two slot but the president did not want to tie his hands.

In his book, the triumphent return,  carter said that he had already decided on a short list of vp before he entered.  He wanted either new mexico governor bill richardson, x indiana rep lee hamilton, new Hampshire senator jeen shaheen or wasington senator marea cantwell. He was leening towards richardson.

Kerry who considered by gore in 2000. Manny democrats were mad that kerry voted for the Iraq war. Carter did not want to pick someone who voted for iraq war. He did not want to alienate thr howard deen wing of the party. He feared deen or someone like him might go third party and bush might win by default.

Kerry suspected that carter might just be toying with a run. Kerry thought if he pushed carter, he might drop out.the party tried to qietly convince kerry not to enter the race. Kerry tried to hoped for sec of sate. Carter said that he would consider him for sec of sate.

In a private meeting, kerry assured kerry that he was running. He asdured him that he was in it to win it. Kerry decided to anounce that he was not running. Kerry knew that he was probably never going to be president.

Kerry went into a slump. He felt like the legs were kicked out from under him. Kerry beleved he could have gotten the nomination. He believed that even with iraq hqnging around his neck, he could still have won. Kerry knew he was not going to be vp.  The best he could hope for was posibly a cabinent post .

Senator john Edwards was called bi clinton number two. He had been considered a serious contender. Carter got the endirsement of former governor jim hunt and curent governor mike easly. Edwards hoped for runing mate but he had been eliminated from consideration. Edwards decided to not run for president. Carter promised to do everything he could to get Edwards relected to thr senate.

Dick gaphardt, former house minority leader wanted to run. He had formed an exploratory comitee. He moved closer to runing even as carter got in. Gaphardt decided not to run against carter. He droped out.

Joe Lieberman had unseated moderate to liberal republican lowel weiker in 1988. He had been an obscure senator. He comdemed bill clinton for his actions but denonced inoeachment. Gore chose him as a runing mate hoping to distence himself from the clinton scandle. Liberman refused to denounce the war in iraq. His platform was fightibg the war on terror better. On April 29th he formerly anounced hid canadacy.

Carter opponents for the nomination were liberman, former congreswomen and ambassador to new zealand carole mosley braun congressman dennis kucinich, and former alasca senator mikr graval. Liberman was careful in his attacks on carter.  He confined it to policy. Carter pushed Liberman to the right. Carter looked like a responsible centrist. A pro carter pac ran an add comparing Liberman with w. The add labeled liberman diet bush.

While carter feared opposition within the democratic party, the nostly token opposition banefited him. The debates made him look presidential. He looked like a centrist.  President bush apearently told carl rove that “his goose was cooked.”

Carter won iowa, new Hampshire and was able to wrap up the nomination in record time. By April he had enough deligates to sicure the nomination. He could focus on the general election.

Carter worked to gain control of the democratic party apparatus.  Carter assembled an elete campagn staff. His v.p canidates tried out on sunday shows and cable tv.

Pols in may of 2004 showed carter with a 60-40 lead over president bush.  No one thought that would hold. Carter aides said that pold would tighten. The war in Iraq continued to sour.  Republican started to fear a landslide defeat for the president.  They also feared it could adversly affect the downticket.

Some in the republican party qietly looked at replqcing bush on the ticket. There was some presue for him to bow out. Some hoped w might sack dick chaney. Many urged him to offer the vice presidential slot to colin powel. Powel was considering endorsing carter. He had made it clear he would probably not serve as secretary of sate in the second term. Bush made it clear that chaney would be his ruining mate not matter what.

Brent  scowcroft the former national secuity advisor to george h.w bush endorsed carter. Henry kisinger endorsed carter and along with zibignew brasinki chared the foregn policy arm of the campagn. X new jersy governor tom keen who chared the 911 commission endorsed carter. Christine tod Whitman who had served as e.p.a admibistrator to president george w bush endorsed carter. She headed up carter’s efort to attract miderate and disaffected republican and independents.

Republican party elders and doners looked into a replacement for the president.  Names like senate mojority leader bill frist, newt gungrich, dan qayle, rudy gulianie, condiliza rice or john Mccain.  Someonr even sugested revruting the elder george bush to run. It was decifed to let bush run. A carter victory would only be a minor setback.  Carter would not be eligible to run in 2008. If bush lost the party could go though a rebuild process.

Senator linkon chafe of road island switched parties to independent.  The republican mojority of 52 seats was ruduced to 51. Senator chuck hagel of nebrasca endorsed carter but continued to caucuses with the republicsns. Ohio governor bob taft endorsed carter.  Taft pledged to do all he could to deliver ohio for carter.

Bush saw his grasp on power sliping away. He was desprate for a way to change the naririve. He made a suprise visit to bagdad. He met with the interem government.  On the same day Iranian president hotamie made a suprise visit to  pyongyang .he met with kim jong ill in what was dubed the kiss seen round the world. Bush”s visit was not even an after thought.  While the visit between the two leaders was a photo op with no agrements it looked bad. New york times front page headline said the axis strikes back.

During the summer, former president ronald reagen died. This brought attention to the reagen carter election of 1980. While bush was catefull not to politicize the funeral the contrast between the carter and Reagan presidentcy were made. Bush was benefiting indirectly from all of the attention made to the 40th president.

A plane was flying in restricted airspace. The capital and surpreme court building was put on lock down. F-15 were dispatched.  The plane refused to turn back and did not respond. The plane was schot down. There were no survors. As it turns out the plane was transporting kyintucky governor eaenie fkecher to dc for the reagen furneral.  The plane malfunctioned.  The bush administration looked like they had an itchy trigger finger.

Of course conspiracy theories abounded.  An imqury chared by mitch mcconnel and paul e patten determined that because there was no radio contact while ill advised it was a resonible response. It was publicity president bush did not want.

Carter had rulled out Washington senator marea cantwell. He wanted to consider a female canidate. Jeen shaheen of new hampshire was elected to the senate after the use of force resolution against Iraq was passed. She defeated republican senator bob smith in the 02 midterms.

He added denis kukinich to hos list of vp nominies and dick gaphardt. Top ades urged him not to pick either. Both were eliminated from considerations. Marcy kaptur of Ohio was vetted but eliminated from consideration.  The short list was whittled down to four.

This was lee Hamilton of indiana, tenisee governor phil bredeson, Jeen shaheen or bill richardson. Sources have said that richardson was his dream canidate from day one of his decision to run.

Richardson was hispanic. He had been a congresman. As a congresman he worked as a back chanel and an as hawk representative for president clinton. He had been nominated three times for a nobel peace prize.  He served as un ambassador and then served as energy secretary.  Despite a black mark on his record during an enugy crises, he had redemed himself by becoming a popular governor in new mecico.

If carter won the presidentcy in 04, and was viewed as sucesfull richardson would be a shoe in for the democraric nominstion. This could be a demicratic readuregence not seen sense the time of franklin roosivelt.

richardson was not void of controversy.  There had been scandals over the years. Nothing too savere.  As enurgy secretary, vermont demictatic senator pat lahy said in a hearing that richardson would never get confirmed to any opounted posistion. There was fears that lahy words might become an add.

Bredeson was risky. He was not well known outside of tenisee. He was new as governor. It seemed like a regonal ticket. Bredeson did not bring much to the ticket.

Shaheen might help him in the northeast.  He was leeding in new england except for maine first congressional district and new hampshire. Most believed carter would dominate the north east if not sweep it especialy new england.

Lee Hamilton looked like a satesman. A catter hamilton ticket would look like adults in the room contrasting the two cowboys in bush and chaney. He was pushed to pick hamilton. Carter incisted on richardson.

Richardson was reluctent to accept. He was in hie first term as governor. He was pushed by democraric party insiders. He accepted. His pic created buzz.

The 2004 democratic platform was to work with alies and made the world safe and us respected.  The slogin was safe at home, respected around the world. Carter advocated focusing on targering terorist commandand control and curbing there capibilities.he wanted to focis on terorist groups. He would work tp streghen iraqi home government as he called it.

The convention included democrats and republicans who endorsed carter. Dr. Kisinger gave a key note explaning why we need jimmy carter in the white house. Richardson spoke of minority building the future of the us. It was a hopefull convention.

Carter curbed much talk of the stolen 2000 election. He said ,that is sosteptember 10th. Carter much to chagrin of some let liberman adress the convention.  Liberman gave a passionate defense of carter and democratic party view of foregn policy.

Carter led bush after the convention 70 percent to his twenty.  The republican convention was held in September.  The republican attempted a morning again in America convention. It was heldin new york city.  They tried to lunk reagen to bush. This led to an angry response from ron Reagan jr. Aganst the wishes of nancy reagen, ron jr went on any network that would have him advocating for carter.

Bush got the bump he hoped for. After the convention bush and carter were tied . bush tried to look presidential.

The relect bush team try a no drama w strategy.  Bush was photographed being president. Bush tried to potrsy hinself as hard working for the American people.

Carter tried to look like a satesman.he also focused in on his work for habitat for humanity. He reached out to younger voters who were babies or not aluve during his administration.

Adds criticizing his administration failed. Bush looked meen. He looked petty. Bush changed his strategy. He tried to look calm and resonible. Carter advocated a patcent bill of rights.  Bush convinced speaker livingston and leader frist to pass it. He signed it neutralizing it as a campagn issue.

The first debate carter was calm, cool and collected.  Bush was on the defensive. Most agree carter won. Richardson performance against fick chany was viwed as lackluster.  Carter is considered to have won the second debate. Bush canceled the third debate and did forums with just him and perspective voters.

On election day, most believed carter had it in the bag. Early in the night carter swept new england and the nottheast. He won georgia, tenisee Alabama.

Bush took florida, Texas, Oklahoma,  lousiana, Virginia, west va, Indiana. Carter took north Carolina.  Carter swept the west coast.  He took won predictable west coast states like Washington,  oregon and California.  He also wom Nevada,  and Colorado. Bush won the plane states. Carter took michigan, Wisconsin,  pensivania and Iowa with little difficulty.  He won ohio.

In the end he swept the west and east coast. He made inroads in the south. He did well in the mid west.  He was declared the 44th president at one am.  It was prery clear erlier that he had won.

President bush promised a smouth transistion. He dispatched vp chaney, defense sectratery rumsfeld and condaleza rice to brief carter personaly the next day. Bush asked president elect carter to apount a liasion who would be an emded with bush whitehouse who would act as his reprsentive. He chose former senator chuck robb for that job.

Bush and carter worked closely on the transistion. Bush wrote in his post presidential book that he despiritly wanted a second term but once he lost he was eager to return to private life.

Could carter have a sucesfull second term? Time would tell.

Notes

I know i will take flack for Ohio gov taft endorsement.taft barly wo. Relection and was unpopular.  His endorsement would stil be a huge deal.

Creating alternative 2014 election.

Alternative history also known as speculative fiction is taking actual events and coming up with a different outcome.  A what if syinerio. Popular one are what if america lost the revolutionary war or what if the south won the cival war. Other syinerios are what if the south won the battle of getysburg or what if normandy invasion failed? Elections are interesting esprcialy congressional.

The 2014 election was a major event in modern u.s history. It was the last election of the berak obama presidentcy. It was the first election sence the 2013 government shitdown and the 2012 sequester.  There was the rise of isis and an ebola oitbreak and fear. The tea party was heading into its third election. The establishment in the republican party had tried to reassert itself and had succeeded.

In the real world the republicans gained nine seats. There was three more then they needed to take power. The republican did not lose a single seat. They held on to open seats.  The denocrats only got one new member. That of gary peaters who replaced longtime senator Carl levin of Michigan.  Mitch mconel servived a primary and general election challenge.  Pat roberts of kanas who seemed to be vanerable ended up not being in jeopardy.  Republican kept control of Georgia.

In alternative history election results are tricky. It is irational to flip every results.  It is unlikly for democrat neils mitchel to upset jim risch in idaho. Probably cam cavaso was not going to win in hawaie. It is best to find probible divation in results.

Some are very easy to alter.  The easiest is in alasca. In the real time line, dan sulivan beat mqrk begitch 48 to 45. It took recounts begore begitch conceded.  It is quite reasonable that behitch could have won. It would mostlikly be close. Without altering other events begitch wining is concevible. A land slide would not unless Obama had been popular, won Alaska in 12 or mit romney won and was unpopular. I perfer to stick closer to the real events.

Another easy race to alter is north caeolina. Tom tilis beat kay hegen 48 to 47. Her wining by the same margin is quite conceivable.  Tilis was speaker of the sate house. Even though nc was a purple satw that slightly leened gop, the house acted like it was a deep red sate. Tilis won a close primary chalenge by dr. Grieg branon. Tilis was establishment anf disliked by tea party and glen beck who for the most part endorsed brenon. Had brenon won might have changed the race.  I am keeping things bascaly the same for this template.

Although Arkansas was real close, mark pryor could have beat tom cotten. Cotten was an architect of the 2013 shutdown along witg ted cruz and mike lee. Arkansas is the hone of bill Clinton and once a democratic stronhold.  In 2008 pryor won unopposed even as arkanas was the bigest win for john mccain.

It is not hard to imagine mark udal holding on to his srat against Gardner.  In my post i put udal against ken buck. In the real time line the gop holding to stop buck from runing recruted gardner. Buck ran for gardners house seat. Buck ran unsuccessfuly against Michael bannet in 2010.

While mitch mconel loss to allison lundegrin grimes is possible.  While the sate goes republican in presidential elections, democrats do well in sate wide races. Although mconel pulled though well,it could have gone the orther way.

Kanas is an interesting one.  Orignally it was a theee eay race between roberts fred duvaul and independent grieg orman. Duval droped out. Orman was the opposition candidate. Orman lost. There are a milion places you could take this. I chose to keep the situation the same up until the results. Moatlikly he would side with the democrats. One canot be totaly sure.

Montana was a bit of a odd series of occurrences. Long time democratic senator conrad burns accrpted a post ad ambassador to china. There was talk of x governor bryan switzer challenging him. Burns took the job probably conident that it would stay in democratic hands. Swizler decided not to run. Lt governor john walsh was appointed to the seat.  Walsh was implicated in a plagerism scandle. Republican congresman Steve danes ran. The denocrats picked amanda carpenter.

Danes won with little dificulty. I decided to keep burns in the race.instead of danes i picked denny rheburg as a kind of sacrificial canidate. There are manny angles you could persue.

In gerogia saxby chamblis decided not to run. Multiple republicans ran. Into the end david perdue got the nod. He run with 50 percent of the vote avoiding a runoff with michelle nun daughter of x senator sam nun. I had Michele nun wining with filthy percent of the vote. This seams the most likly alternate to the real time line.

There are mutiple others. Nun and perdue go to runoff.  Nun and another runing.  Her in a runoff with someone else etc. One i find interesting but did not explore was what if the losiana runoff produced a 51-50 split then nun won georgia ruboff. That would create a 50-50 split .joe biden would break the tie and democrats would rule the senate.

Loisiana is another intetesting race. In the real race, mary landru was forced into a runof with bill casidy. Casidy won. I chose to keep close to the real events. I had landru win the runoff.

One could go in orther directions. Lundru could have got 51 percent. She could have faced rob mandes. Mandes was tea party guy but had little suport in lousiana or with republican establishment.

Iowa could have gone difetently. Senator tom harken could have stayed in the race.  Bruce braily could have won. He was viwed as a favorite until high profile gaffs. In a wave election ernst though impressive would have faced a tough road. Ernst might not have gotten the nomination.

In the south Carolina special election, tim scot easily won. Had jim demint not left the senate there would be no special election. Had the democrats mounted a serious opisition it could have gone differently. In a wave election, if denocrat vincent sheheen had won the governors race, a canidate could have riden on his coatales. I chose to leave this race as it was in the real timeline.

Texas,i left the same. I could have had steve stockman beating cornine but i did not. I decided not to have the democrats mount a serious chalenge to him. If wendy davis beat abot in the governors race, there could have been a coat tale.

Tenisee was a ho hum race in the real universe. Lamer alexander easily won a third term. I saw no reason to alter it.

In va, mark warnet eaked out a win against ed gilaspe. In this tine line i had Warner win another landslide.  I considered having someone other then gilaspe but decided to keep it as is. I could have had gilaspe win but in a dem wave year it made little sense that blue va would go red.

In west va ,jay Rockefeller decided not to run. He did it almost imidietly after the 2012 election. This gave republican shelly more capitato time to prepare. The dems chose netali tennet. This could have been competitive but was not reallt.

Given that west va is a denocratic machine sate ,she could have won.i decided to have tennet win.

Wyoming,  mike enzi beat liz chaney for the nomination then went on to win the election. I could have chaney won. I decided not to. I decided to keep it as is.

In a paralel sitution, the results would be fliped. In Minnesota having all franken lose to mike mcfeddon in a dem year made no sense. Having tom udal lose im new hanpshire in my universe made little sense. I considered an upset in oregon. Have monica whitby win in oregon. It seemed ilogical for whitby to win.

I am not totaly happy with my decision to have scot brown beat shaheen. I kind of wanted to have one surprise. Mayby if someone else chalenged shaheen i might be more happy.

South decota was a fascinating race. It was an open seat. Former governor mike rounds apeared to be a shoe in to replace democrat tim jonson. Then lary presser steped in as an independent.  Rick weylan a throw away canidate got traction. In my template,  rick wrhland pullef off a victory.  I could have had presser win. Presler said he would join the democrats if elected.

Oklihoma special election i kept the same. Had coburn not decided to quit there would be no race. I decided not to change it. Had dan borren or x gov brad henry ran it might have turned diffferently. That is too speculative for me.

I realy think Nebraska  could have gone difetently.  In the real time line ben suess got 60 percent or so. If the democrats were having a good year. Nebraska could have been in play. Sues was a problimetic canidate. Sues could have lost to shane osborn. Osborn could have facef domina. I think that is a resonable flip in an alternative time line.

I believe jef seasons would win in probly other alternative time line. I just dont see him losing. Jim risch is another one i just dont see losing in 2014.  Chris coons, cory booker, ed marky are senators that i just dont see losing.

Alternative or specutive history is not an exact science. We are speculating.  This is a guess. There is no way to test these theories.  I dont have acess to a timet from sliders. I love alternative history. It is fun to engage in this kind of speculation.  At least i find it fun.

Chestnut springs part four

Newly minted federal states of anglomer marshal Bryan durgens was on his way to take up his post In  the town of chestnut springs. He had been acoasted by a mage. He has been targeted by bandits.he had even made an arrest. He and his prisoner was on there way with the captive. They were nearing the area.

” You know your crazy to think you can tame this land. This land is made to be wild. Wild canions, wild animals wild people. It is crazy to think that you can civilize this vast reigon. Your dream of making this reigon part of the federal state and is crazy. “Choe said.

“All of the great nations had to start somewhere. Tori g tribes, small city states, families. It can happen. Maybe it won’t. Something has to happen. I can’t believe the outlands will remane as it is now. It can’t. Something has to happen. ” Durgens said.

“The red ember just wanted to get rid of it. They needed a slump to but it. They tried to sell it to Carolina.they passed on it. Cadamer passed on it. The nation of Ferdinand passed on it. Ruso passed on it. It is too hard to manage . The area is unmanigible . Why not just leave it alone. Let the bandits fight it out. “She said.

“It did not work that way. Eventually it would spread into the federal states or catilona or into cadamer. The termoil in the outlands won’t be confined to the outlands forever. It will spread. “,Durgens said.”you are going to have to fully mobilize.an all out military occupation. The factions will have to put down. The money ,the blood that will have to be spent.”she said.”fight it now or fight it later. We chose to do it now”he said.

“Your government is crazy to come up with this plan. Your crazy to go along with it.”she said. “Your not the first person to question my sanity. “He said.”the life of a lawman is solitary. You resigned to bring a belchor. “She asked. “Many in my profession chose to be belchors. It is a hard job,a hard life. I want to be maried! I hope I am not doomed to perpetual singleness. “He said. She smiled.

They kept riding. All of a suden he started to feel weird. He had a massive headache. He fell to the ground. She dismounted. She ran to him. “Bryan! Brain!”she said. He started to be OK. “I felt light headed. I think I am OK!”he said. ” Rest for a second!”she insisted”this has never happened before. I was fun and then it hit me. It was a genetic Strom cloud schot a massive lightning bolt on my head.”he said. “I don’t think this was a fluke event . I think it is a mind qake device. “Choe said.

“What is a mind  quake device?”durgens asked. “It is a device used by mages. The device is able to cause head aches. There are rumors that it could kill. No one knows if it is true. The mages claim that these devices are mythical.part of anti mage propaganda. Everyone knows it is true. No one would admit it. ” She said. “I would say this was the opening salvo. They already attacked me once”he said. “The mages won’t quit. There strategy is keep attacking. They go small and escilate” she said. “This is going to get worse?”he asked.”yes. The mages are letting you know that they know about you. Your on there racer. You are on there crappy list. It get worse then hear!”she said.

He rested for a while. Then they rode again. They continued on the way to the town of chestnut springs. They neared the town.

The mages alied with elikon reported back to elikon.”we sent the message to the devil law man. He got it!  A mage said.”is he trying back?”elikon asked.”no he is still on his way to chestnut springs. “,Another mage reported. Elikon smiled with a devilish smile.”good. I had hoped he would be brave.i want to have a competitor. A bemused. It seams I have one. I look froward to being able to challenge this man!”elikon said.he laughed.

The law man and his prisoner rode closer to chestnut springs . They saw a sign for the town. ” Vani have a minute? ,” ,She asked.”yes. “He said.they got off the horse.she took food and eat it. She sat down. She looked around. She took everything in. She looked at the sun. The sky. “You going to try to escape?”he asked. “No. I am tired of running. I don’t have it in me. “She said. ” I could over look this! “He said. “No you can’t. You would hate yourself and you would hate me. Work within the syistom. “She said.

“I wish I had not caught you. I don’t want to turn you over to the authorities. “He said. “You will fight for me?”she asked.”it may take time. I will do what I can. You have my word on that. The law is a bit merky out hear. Yes I will. “He told her.

He heard a noise. “What is it?”she asked. “Wait hear.”,he said. He got his gun out if the holster. He moved slowly but in a determined fasshon.he moved further out. He saw a red ribbon! He kept going. He went into a cave. He saw a tall man. He was six feet. He had a well trained mustache. He had brownish hair. He apeered to be his mid thirties perhaps a bit older. He looked seasoned but work has vigor. He looked disciplined. He had a stager. He  guessed that he had served in a military and was probably a unit commander. Either a sergeant or an officer. He had his gun out.

“You have guts. Putting that red ribbon. If bandits or gangs or mages came in you, they would shoot you on sight or worse ! I hear mages have impalled people with those magic wand of there’s. That is just a rumor. I hear the outlands is full of them. “Durgens said.

“,Well you cannot believe everything you hear! ” The other man declared. “Perhaps not. Let me guess red ember external affairs directorate. “Durgens said. “At your service! Felix Larson. “He said. ” Red ember has no jurisdiction hear. The deal to buy the outlands stipulated that the red ember would fully withdraw form the area including clandestine operations. “Durgens said. ” I am no longer part of the read. I resigned form the agency. I have a personal steak. I fear that if you fail to govern this area, it could spread like wild fire. Eventually it could soil over into catilona, and giveldi and even into cedomer. Someone needs to keep an eye of things.besides I did not want to take a desk job back in red city.”Felix said!

” Understand or. I was offered verious posistions in the f.s.a  bureaucracy. I ran. Form it as fast as I possibly could. “He said. “I wanted to introduce myself. I try to keep a low profile. I could be an ally. At some point you might need me. I will be there. ” Felix said. ” I am surprised . Red ember people tend to be full of themselves. Out for own.”durgens said. ” I have spent most of my adult life in the atune. This is more of my home then the mother country. “Felix said.

” How did in contact with you?”he asked. “Put out a red ribbon. Do it outside city limits. I will come.”Felix said. “I see. This was just an introductory meating?”durgens asked. “I felt it was important. Every petty theef to bandit to gang to mage is tuning for you. You will be the most distent marshal in the outlands. They want you gone. If they can behead you and send the head to the Congress in federal city, they will do it. ” Felix said. ” Great! I am really not that unlovible. ” Durgens said. ” It’s not personal. It who you represent well what. This is chaos vrs order. ” Felix said.

“I will see you around?”durgens Said. “You got it.”he tiped his hat and walked off. He got on to his horse and rode off. He left the cave . “You were gone for quite a while. “Choe said. “We are fine? We better get going. I would like to get to town before it gets dark. ” He said.

They rode to town. They entered. “I’m doctor brenen. I am chestnut springs doctor. I am the closest thing to an authority. We have not had a mayor of town council in a few years. People come to me. “He said.”Cornelius Bryan durgens f.s.a Marshall. “He said. He showed his badge and have his papers.the doctor looked them over. ” Everything seams in order. I have aranged an official sharing in cerimony. The whole town will attend.”the doctor said. “,Of course. “He said. “The old beraks have been reserved as your home. You can live in the commander’s residence. “The physician said. “Excellent.”he said.

“Who is this?” The doctor asked. “This is choe walles. She is under arrest. “Durgens said. “She will be taken to the jail at once. “The doctor said. He told her he would help her. A man named Tim offered totwke him to his home.

“You a veterin?” Bryan asked. ” Yes I am.” Tim Hyde said. ” I need deputies.i will have to reconsisiton funds . I won’t be able to pay you much until the paper work. Are you interested?”he asked. “Yes I am. I was decorated with the star of alpha, rings of two. I left as a warrented sergeant. “He said.” Iam not surprised. You look like a veterin “he said. “I grew up near federal city. I was a farm boy. I was conscripted during the war. I never planned to stay in. I had nothing else to do. I tried to go home. It was not me any more.i left and somehow I ended up hear.”he said.” I understand. It is a common thing. I went to the war college.i ment it to be a carer. My dad intended me to be in Congress,a senator or may y even president. “He said. “Do you want that?” Tim asked. “One day at a time.” He said.

They  came across the property. It was large house with our buildings. They was place for a farm. They parked the houses. They got off. They saw a young mom with a young child.” Someone is living hear?”he asked.”the building was unused. We had no news on a marshal. We began to think that no one as coming. She is a squatter. The doctor told her she should stay until the marhsla came. “Tim said. “Where will she go?”Bryan said. “I don’t know. She will have to find another abandoned buildings I suppose.,”Tim said.

Tim and Bryan said Good byes. He went inside. “Your the marhall? ” The young mom. Said. “Yes . Bryan durgens. F.s.a marshal. ,”He said. She picked up he baby. She got her things. “What are you doing ?”Bryan asked. They headed out. “We are leaving?” She asked. “That’s not nesisary. I don’t need this much space. Six of me did not need this much space. I see no reason can’t stay. I will square it away with the local clergy so that there is not an issue.” He said. ” I cook. I can earn my keep.”she said. “We can discuss the later. ” Welcome to chestnut springs Marshall.,”she said.”,call me Bryan !,,”he said.  “OK!”she said.

Elikon was informed that he was hear. Elikon was preparing a porter eleco me for the law man.

End of part four.

Chestnut spring  part three.

The town of chessnut springs had been a command city for the red ember colony. When the red ember pulled out, bandits, outlaws and mages moved in. Under the rule of red ember, the town had a vibrant administrative municipal government. It crumbled imidiatly after the pull out by the coalition. The town tried to organize a town government after the pull out but it failed. The council members were killed or fled. The town was basically in a sate of anarchy.

There was no one to enforce the law. During the rule of the c.o.r.e, garbage collection and other public utilities were taken care off. That went out the window once the red ember pulled out. There were no police. Farmers and ranchers took mater’s into there own hands. They battled outlaws. They also battled other ranchers and Farmers over water access. Some times Farmers united with other Farmers to fight what they saw as injustice. There was no one to step in aned stop it.

There was organized and unorganized crime. Some gangs were confined to a town. Others had a larger reach. Others were petty criminal. Gangs had been known to fight other gangs.

Then there was the mages. Magic was banned in the federated States most nations banned magic. While red ember banned magic, they turned a blind eye in the outlands. They hoped to appease the mages and those who supported them.

In ancient days, mages controlled population though fear. In the old days, you did what they told you to do or face the consequences. That could be in the form of pestilence, dragons or having your soul cursed. In the olden days, mages used there dark arts to grab land or charge there own Texas in addition to national taxis. Mages even used there magic against kings. Sometimes they propped up kings. They also removed ones they did not like.

With the rise of philosophy, science and the influence of the monotheism of kurios. This caused the influence of the mages to decline. Many abandoned the profession. There were fewer new recruits. Magic became associated with evil. Many came to see mages as egoistical pragmatist.

While mages declined every where else, they thrived in the outlands. While they had a reputation as being mean, fearc and whimsical, they providd stability in unstable areas. In the outlands, they were tolerated. Manny war Lords saught  them out.there help always came with a price.

The f.s.a had not totally moved into the outlands. There control was mostly confined to the borders. They had little influence in the interior. The goal of the f.s.a to toalty route out mages. That was proving to be a harder task then what they had anticipated.

The most feared of all of the mages in the outlands was elikon.elikon was a master mage. He was called the silver mage. While his fellow mages revered him they also feared him. He had no interest in being loved adored or even liked. He wanted to be feared. It was sad that he had no friens.not even fellow mages.

Elikon had made a kind of non aggression pact with the red ember. Then he switch sides and supported those opposed to the ocupation. Then he betrayed them. This gave him power and wealth. He got rich off protection money and tributes. It also made him enemies.

Red ember made several attempts to asasinate him. They failed. They tried to convince other mages to turn against him. That was a huge disaster. This caused his influence to grow not wain. He calmed he was the reason the coalition withdrew. He believed he could do the same to the f.s.a. he had come to see himself as almost  invincible. He came to see himself as a god.

No one was truly invincible. It was a common delusion. The evidence made him think that he was. This dilusion grew and grew. When they were duluded they were the most dangerous. Elikon was no different.

One of the mages underling came to see him. He was summoned. That garentined no protection. Breathing was a risk around someone like elikon. The younger knocked on the door. The door was opeed. The mage greated him.

“Excellentcy! The Marshall nears chestnut springs. “The younger mage said. Elikon wore a long silver robe. He carried a large wound in his hand. He ad long flowing hair and beared.he was eight feet tall. “Did he get my message?”he asked. “Yes! He has not turned back!” The he mage said. “Not that u expected him to. I like a challenge. I welcome his opposition. I love opposition. I love having an enemy. I love putting them down like a junkyard dog. This Marshall won’t have a chance! ” The mage said.”why not kill him?” The other mage asked. ” The fsa will only replace him or send in the army. No we need to send a clear message. We need a public face for the imperialist. We need a poster child. Trust me I know how to defeat empires. Believe me I will!” He said.

End of part three.

chesnut spring

The federated sates of angloomer was a rising power in the atune continent. The nation was starting to expand.  Without the political will or financial means ,the red ember an intercontinental coiliton sold a reifon of space kbwon as the outlands to the f.s.a. the outlands were lands that were foreboding and harsh. It was difficult to grow anything.  Although the lands were oficially controlled by the red ember, that was in name only.

In reality the outlands were rylled by two groups. One was outlaw gangs. Gangs who filled though superior fire power. They had a might makes right mentality. The other group was the mages.

The mazes were those who practiced magic. In anglomer, catolon, red ember and nearby crember, magic is ilegal. Anglomer is committed to anti magic. The goal of the FSA in the outlands was to reconstitute the region into member sates of the federation. The federation was a free society but neseity forced the outlands to be under an emergency order. The military and the marhsal service . many of the gangs had been broken up. Many still refuse to accept f.s.a rule. This included the mages.

A man rode though the frontier. It had been houses sence he left the inner federation. He was now in the ocupupied outlands. Many of the outlands was ungoverned. Some say it was ungovernable.

Marshal Bryan durgeen tried to maintain his composure. He had the power of a judge ,police and a military governor. That ment little to the law breakers of the outlands. If an outlaw found him, they would not hesitate to fire on him. He did want to speculate on what a maze would do.

Durgen had been though worse in his life. He had been a sholdjer. He had served in war and peace time and had engaged In police actions. He knew how go handle most situations. He knew if he hesitated even for a split second, his life could be over.

He kept riding. He felt like he was being persued. He pretended like nothing was a miss. He kept on going. He had no idea when they would strike. He was confident that they would strike. He was determined to be ready.

Unlike some of his orther marshalls,he actually paid attention to the breffings back in federated city. He had memorized the route from the federated proper to the command post in chestnut spring. He had a photographic memory. He could see the picture of the route in his head. He knew that he was near a series of boulders. A dead end.

He suspected that whoever was tailing him was doing so in order to ambush him. Durgen was going to try to turn the tables on them. He suspected that they had no idea that he was a law man. They probably assumed that he was a rich travaler. All he had on him was a few dollars and a series of federation vouchers that the bandit’s would find useless. They might kill him just for the insult. He suspected that that they were pery thugs and not part of a major crime syndicate.

He rode right for the large rocks. There were a series of large boulders. The flat area between the rocks were narrow. He would be venerable. He was traping himself. He had no where to go. This was the only wah to draw them out. He heard the sounds of horses. There were seven in all. There were five males and two females.

“There is no where to run boss!” The lead bandit declared.he started to climb one of the rock face. It was not quite a mountain. It was a little larger then a simple hill. The thugs neared the rock. They had to dismount. One of the women had to gaurd the horses. The rest started to climb the rock. He ran and jumped off of the rock. The thugs never got a chance to climb the rock. He charged the outlaws. He fired his rifle in to the air. The horses were spooked. The horses started to run off.

Durgen schot one of the thugs in the leg. He hit another outlaw in the back. Durgen was an excellent schot. One of the gunman got on his horse. He tried to ram durgen. Durgen fired on him. The man fell off of the horse. He was killed instently.

Durgen was fired on. He had to dodge several schots. He roled around the ground and fired back. The ring leader got on his horse. He fired on the Marshall. Bryan ran on to the horse. The horse was spooked. The horse ran with both still on it. Bryan pushed the bandit to the ground. Durgen himself was pushed off of the horse. He was a little swore but otherwise was fine. The ringleader famed himself into the Marshall.

The bandit tried to punch him. He matched his punch. He hit the thug hit him with  the but of his riffle! The thug head butted him. Durgen fell back. He kicked the man in the shins. The man  was in pain. He took his rifle and fired.the man was dead. He let the two women go. He should try to aptehend them. They would not elude justice forever. He was out in the open hr had no back up. He had to get to the command post. This was indeed a dangerous place.

He kept on going. He rode on for a few hours unhindered. He made it to a check point. He went to a booth. It was maned by a single man.an oficial of the f.s.a government. He was part of the department of the interior. “Durgen f.s.a Marshall. ” he said. He showed the clerk his paper work. “Your a ways away from chessnut spring Marshall. ” the clerk said. ” I have yet to take up residence. I just got my commission. ” he said. “Be carefully. This area is known for bandits. ” the clerk said. “I am keenly aware of it. ” Bryan said in response.

He signed the paper work. “Good luck Marshall. Your going to need it!” The clerk said. ” anything else I should know!”he asked. “Bewhare of the silver maze. ” he said. “I will. ” he said. Then he rode off.

The Marshall kept on riding. It went from day to night. It became dark. He had grown up in the city of Charliebakersville. He loved night in the city. Even with the signs of industrialization it was beutifull.  While in the wirkderness it was beutifull natural. It was a lie. There were a thousand ways to die. He knew how to survive. He had to. Hus adult life had been spent on battle fields. He was ready.

He heard the sound of a horse coming for him. He got his gun ready. He rode towards the horse. “You want me come and get me! ” he said taunting the other rider. The rider rode to him. Some called the time between one am and five the hour of the wolf.  Many claimed to see a wolf man hybred who tried to eat then. Many chalked it up to a hilucinstion of an embodiment of ones fears. The danger Bryan was about to face was not a wolf but a human. He was up to the challenge.

End of part one.

Speaker gapgardt part three

In 1998,ricard gaphardt was man of the year for time magazine. He slowly became one of the most powerful people in the united states.
Could he hold on to the speakers gaval?  Gaphardt had a favorable pol rating tgehoughout 1999 And 20000. There were several seats that were held by republicans and seamed in play.
2000 Was a presidential election year. Though bill Clinton was stil popular ,there was Clinton fatigue. Al gore did not quite have the pizaz that his boss had. Could republicans cash in on george bush’s coatales?
The democrats fielded canidates in califonia and new york. Grass roots groups involved in isues sutch as gun control, pro chioce and climate change also went on the ofensive.
The republicans had problems of there own. Former speaker Gingrich was forced to step down as republican leader. His replacement, lousiana’s robert Livingston was quite efective, he was forced out after hustler magazine uncovered several scandals involving him. He was replaced by wrestling coach turned congressman dennis hastert. He was respected by hours republicans. Republican voters felt that he was the political reincarnation of bob micheals. George w. Bush tried to distence himself from congresional republicans and.especially the empeachment debacle.
Al gore argued the need for a democrativ congress to help get his agenda passed. He campagned for a patcients bill og rights,a perscription drug program,a social sicurity lock box, as well as reducing green house gass.
Al gore ended up wining the presidentcy but barely. The results of the election was stalled due to reconts in florida. The supreme court in a five four decision declined to stop the recont. George bush finally conceded.
While the presidential race was close, the democratic victory was not. Democrats were able to put a final nail in the cofen of the 1994 republican revolution. Incumbents sutch as bryan bilbrey of California ,republican micheal forbes of new york even republican joe Scarborough of florida lost. Gaphardt was back.
With the third democratic presidential mandate and a democratic congress, president gore hit the ground running. He formerly perposed the patcients bill of right and a persciption drug program. He tried to off set the rx program with targarted tax increase on top owners. It pleased deficit hawks, blue dog were not pleased with the tax increase.
The patcients bill of rights did pass with most democrats voting for it and a few republicans. This got the ire of grover norquest. The senate passed it but the vote was a lot closer. Senator McCain voted no even though he suported it in principle.
President gore signed the perscription drug bill and the bill of rights at the same time in an elaborate signing cerimony. Republicans depicted gore ans gapheardt as tax and spend liberals.
Not only did the honey moon between voters and the white house go shower,so did the honey  moon between the president and the speaker. The president perposed a carbon tax. It was aimed at top erners but after the perscription drug program, even some moderate to conservitive democrats were saying enough is enough.
Gaphardt tried to talk him out of it. The president got angery with him. He explaned to him that this is no ordinary emergentcy. The fate of the planet was literally in the balience. The president acused gapheardt of not being a true belever. At one point gaphardt threten to switch parties although it was an idle threat.
Gaphardt decided to go ahead with the vote. Gaphardt was feeling the presure from all sides. Democratic representive vurgil good switched to republican as did ohio congresman tony hall and texas congressman ralph hall. Gapheardt got the bill passed. He was mentally and physically exchausted.
Democrats were becoming more and more unpopular. Republican were wining the generic balot in the sumer of 2001. Gapherdt himself considering leaving congress.
Then every thing changed. Terrorist aligned with ossama bin ladden hijacked several planes. Two hit the world trade center. Another hit the pentigon.a fouth crashed in pensivania. Republicans and democrats joined together. President gore targeted alquida camps in athganistan, somolia, sudan and philipines.
It changed the nature of the presidentcy. Gore vowed to keep america safe. Democrats became very popular. Then politics came back. Republican asked for tax relief. Gore said we have to fight terorism, save the planet and save social security all at the same time. He declared that they could not aford it.
Republicans made tax relief a big isue. Democrats acused republican of puting the ritch above the little guy. On election day, democrats kept control of the house and senate.
Gaphardt remaned speaker. David boner ran for governor if Michigan. Nancy pilosi of sanfransisco replaced her. President gore wanted pilosi to replace him. Gore tried to get gaphardt to run for the senate or governor or acept a cabinent post. Gaphardt decided to stay on. Gore decided not to take him on.
The president continued to take on terrorist all over the world. He used multiple tools in his arsenal. He created the department of homeland sicurity. He apointed former general Wesley clark to the post.
While Howard deen the former governor of vermont who claimed to represent the democratic wing of the democratic party considered runing against gore in the primary in opodistion to his use of the military as a hit squared. Gore also feard gapheardt might jump in. Gaphardt was not interested.
Dean decided not to run for president. Gaphardt passed on it as well. Gore faced john mcain. McCain ran on doia better job in the war on terror. He even sugested invading iraq. He susjested that iraq may have helped plan 911 attacks.
Al gore won relection wining 49 percetof the vote. The democrats lost a few seats but kept control of the house. The senate was 50-50 but with the tie breaking vote by vice president bob ghram they basically had a mojority.
President gore really wanted nancy pilosi as speaker. Gore ofored him un ambassador but he declined. While he did not want to lose sec of sate holbrock ,he was wiling to sack him to get gaphardt out of the speakers chair.  gaphardt was not interested.
Pilosi did not want to challenge gaphardt but would if she had gore’s complete suport. Though gapheardt considered leaving any ways he did want to be taken out in a corps. Former president Clinton who did not like that gore was outshining him went on 60 minutes prasing gapheardt. While gore did not like his old boss mediling he dis not want an on air fued. He abandoned plans to take on gapgeardt.
Gore wanted to extend the carbon tax. Gaphardt feared the democratic colition would implode. Gore was in legacy mode and wanted to be the environmentle president. Gapheardt perposed off setting the tax with the elimination of the esate tax for ten years. Gore knew the deficit hawks would rebel. Gore decided to back down al together.
Gore looked weak. Us got vicrories in the war on teror.then gore poparity plumited after whay seemed to be a poor responce to haricaine Katrina. Gore numbers went to an all time low.
Right before the election, senator john kery said if you don’t get a good education ,you might end up in somolia.
In the 2006 election , democrats lost control of the house. Even gapheardt himself lost his seat in st lois. Although in 2008, russ carnahan won it back for the democrats. Republican took control with tom delay the former pest exterminator as speaker.
Gapheardt was replaced by nancy pilosi. Gapheatdt was apounted ambassador to Germany wich he continued to be until the end of his term. He returned to st. Lois in 2008 but kept a low profile.
