The federated sates of angloomer was a rising power in the atune continent. The nation was starting to expand.  Without the political will or financial means ,the red ember an intercontinental coiliton sold a reifon of space kbwon as the outlands to the f.s.a. the outlands were lands that were foreboding and harsh. It was difficult to grow anything.  Although the lands were oficially controlled by the red ember, that was in name only.

In reality the outlands were rylled by two groups. One was outlaw gangs. Gangs who filled though superior fire power. They had a might makes right mentality. The other group was the mages.

The mazes were those who practiced magic. In anglomer, catolon, red ember and nearby crember, magic is ilegal. Anglomer is committed to anti magic. The goal of the FSA in the outlands was to reconstitute the region into member sates of the federation. The federation was a free society but neseity forced the outlands to be under an emergency order. The military and the marhsal service . many of the gangs had been broken up. Many still refuse to accept f.s.a rule. This included the mages.

A man rode though the frontier. It had been houses sence he left the inner federation. He was now in the ocupupied outlands. Many of the outlands was ungoverned. Some say it was ungovernable.

Marshal Bryan durgeen tried to maintain his composure. He had the power of a judge ,police and a military governor. That ment little to the law breakers of the outlands. If an outlaw found him, they would not hesitate to fire on him. He did want to speculate on what a maze would do.

Durgen had been though worse in his life. He had been a sholdjer. He had served in war and peace time and had engaged In police actions. He knew how go handle most situations. He knew if he hesitated even for a split second, his life could be over.

He kept riding. He felt like he was being persued. He pretended like nothing was a miss. He kept on going. He had no idea when they would strike. He was confident that they would strike. He was determined to be ready.

Unlike some of his orther marshalls,he actually paid attention to the breffings back in federated city. He had memorized the route from the federated proper to the command post in chestnut spring. He had a photographic memory. He could see the picture of the route in his head. He knew that he was near a series of boulders. A dead end.

He suspected that whoever was tailing him was doing so in order to ambush him. Durgen was going to try to turn the tables on them. He suspected that they had no idea that he was a law man. They probably assumed that he was a rich travaler. All he had on him was a few dollars and a series of federation vouchers that the bandit’s would find useless. They might kill him just for the insult. He suspected that that they were pery thugs and not part of a major crime syndicate.

He rode right for the large rocks. There were a series of large boulders. The flat area between the rocks were narrow. He would be venerable. He was traping himself. He had no where to go. This was the only wah to draw them out. He heard the sounds of horses. There were seven in all. There were five males and two females.

“There is no where to run boss!” The lead bandit declared.he started to climb one of the rock face. It was not quite a mountain. It was a little larger then a simple hill. The thugs neared the rock. They had to dismount. One of the women had to gaurd the horses. The rest started to climb the rock. He ran and jumped off of the rock. The thugs never got a chance to climb the rock. He charged the outlaws. He fired his rifle in to the air. The horses were spooked. The horses started to run off.

Durgen schot one of the thugs in the leg. He hit another outlaw in the back. Durgen was an excellent schot. One of the gunman got on his horse. He tried to ram durgen. Durgen fired on him. The man fell off of the horse. He was killed instently.

Durgen was fired on. He had to dodge several schots. He roled around the ground and fired back. The ring leader got on his horse. He fired on the Marshall. Bryan ran on to the horse. The horse was spooked. The horse ran with both still on it. Bryan pushed the bandit to the ground. Durgen himself was pushed off of the horse. He was a little swore but otherwise was fine. The ringleader famed himself into the Marshall.

The bandit tried to punch him. He matched his punch. He hit the thug hit him with  the but of his riffle! The thug head butted him. Durgen fell back. He kicked the man in the shins. The man  was in pain. He took his rifle and fired.the man was dead. He let the two women go. He should try to aptehend them. They would not elude justice forever. He was out in the open hr had no back up. He had to get to the command post. This was indeed a dangerous place.

He kept on going. He rode on for a few hours unhindered. He made it to a check point. He went to a booth. It was maned by a single man.an oficial of the f.s.a government. He was part of the department of the interior. “Durgen f.s.a Marshall. ” he said. He showed the clerk his paper work. “Your a ways away from chessnut spring Marshall. ” the clerk said. ” I have yet to take up residence. I just got my commission. ” he said. “Be carefully. This area is known for bandits. ” the clerk said. “I am keenly aware of it. ” Bryan said in response.

He signed the paper work. “Good luck Marshall. Your going to need it!” The clerk said. ” anything else I should know!”he asked. “Bewhare of the silver maze. ” he said. “I will. ” he said. Then he rode off.

The Marshall kept on riding. It went from day to night. It became dark. He had grown up in the city of Charliebakersville. He loved night in the city. Even with the signs of industrialization it was beutifull.  While in the wirkderness it was beutifull natural. It was a lie. There were a thousand ways to die. He knew how to survive. He had to. Hus adult life had been spent on battle fields. He was ready.

He heard the sound of a horse coming for him. He got his gun ready. He rode towards the horse. “You want me come and get me! ” he said taunting the other rider. The rider rode to him. Some called the time between one am and five the hour of the wolf.  Many claimed to see a wolf man hybred who tried to eat then. Many chalked it up to a hilucinstion of an embodiment of ones fears. The danger Bryan was about to face was not a wolf but a human. He was up to the challenge.

End of part one.
